FAQ
Questions we get asked every week.
If yours is not here, call us. We are happy to give advice over the phone even if it means telling you the job does not need doing yet.
Booking and pricing
How much will it cost?
Carpet is priced per room, hallways at half a room, stairs per flight, and upholstery per item. Commercial work is priced per square metre. Tell us the number of rooms and rough condition and we will give you a fixed figure over the phone. There is a minimum charge for very small jobs to cover travel and setup.
Is the quote fixed?
Yes. The price we agree before starting is the price you pay, unless you add rooms or items on the day. Optional extras like pet urine treatment, deodorising or carpet protector are quoted separately and never added without asking you first.
How soon can you come?
Most Auckland jobs can be booked within two or three working days. End of tenancy cleans get priority and can usually be done within one or two. We hold weekend slots for people who cannot be home during the week.
Do you charge extra for weekends?
No surcharge for Saturday or Sunday residential work. After hours commercial work is quoted at the time because it usually involves building access arrangements.
How do I pay?
Bank transfer, card or cash on completion for residential work. Account customers and property managers can be invoiced on the 20th of the following month.
On the day
Do I need to be home?
Not necessarily. Plenty of jobs are done with a key safe code or a key collected from a property manager. We would prefer you are there at the start so we can agree the scope, and at the end for the walk-through, but we can work around your day.
Do I have to move the furniture?
No. We move sofas, chairs, coffee tables and beds and put them back where they were, on protective tabs where needed. We ask that you clear small items, breakables, electronics and anything valuable off the floor. Very heavy items such as full bookcases, pianos and wall units stay put and we clean around them.
Should I vacuum before you arrive?
You do not need to. A commercial pre-vacuum is part of every job and is not charged as an extra. A quick tidy of floor clutter helps more than vacuuming does.
What do you need on site?
Reasonable vehicle access, a cold water tap and a power point. Tell us in advance if you are in an apartment without lift access or if parking is restricted, so we can allow the right amount of time.
Drying and results
How long does carpet take to dry?
Three to six hours is typical. In an Auckland summer with windows open it can be closer to three. In the middle of a wet winter, allow six to eight and run a heat pump on dry rather than opening the house up. You can walk on it straight away in clean socks.
Why has a stain come back after a couple of days?
That is wicking. Something soaked into the underlay at some point, and as the carpet dried it drew back up to the surface. It is not a failed clean and it is fixable. Call us within a week and we will treat it at no charge.
Will my carpet look brand new?
It will look considerably better and usually more colourful than the owner expected, because the original colour was covered rather than faded. What cleaning cannot reverse is physical wear: fibre that has been abraded flat in a traffic lane, or pile that has been crushed for years, has changed shape rather than changed colour.
Do you guarantee the work?
If you are not happy with an area once it has fully dried, tell us within seven days and we will come back and redo it. We do not guarantee removal of stains we identified as permanent at the quote stage, which is why we identify them up front.
Health, safety and fibre
Are the products safe for children and pets?
Yes. We choose products that are safe around people and animals once dry, and hot water extraction rinses them back out rather than leaving them sitting in the pile. If someone in the house has a specific chemical sensitivity, tell us when booking and we will adjust. Product safety data sheets are available on request.
Does steam cleaning help with allergies?
It helps considerably. Dust mites feed on skin cells that settle into carpet, and their waste is a major household allergen. Hot water extraction removes both the food source and a large share of the mite population using heat rather than a chemical residue. Bedrooms are usually where households notice the biggest difference.
Can you clean wool carpet?
Yes, and a great many New Zealand homes have it. Wool needs controlled pH, wool safe chemistry and careful moisture management, because over-wetting can cause shrinkage, felting or browning. It is a different approach to synthetic, not a harder one, but it does need to be done by someone who knows the difference.
Will steam cleaning shrink my carpet?
Not when moisture is controlled properly. Shrinkage happens when a carpet is saturated and not enough water is extracted back out, usually with natural fibres on a jute backing. We monitor how much moisture goes down and pull far more back out than we put in.
How often should carpets be cleaned?
Every twelve to eighteen months for a household with no pets or young children. Every twelve months with children. Every six months with indoor pets. Commercial traffic lanes benefit from quarterly attention with two full floor cleans a year. Check your carpet warranty too, some manufacturers require professional cleaning at set intervals.
Do you clean rugs?
Yes. Most rugs can be cleaned in place. Wool, silk, and hand knotted rugs are usually better taken away for a controlled wash and dry, which we can arrange with collection and return.
Still have a question?
Call and ask. We would rather give free advice than have you book something you do not need.
